Interleasing has partnered with Australian Red Cross for over a decade, supporting its mission to reach communities in crisis while reducing the environmental impact of its vehicle fleet. Together, the organisations have delivered a data‑driven, fit‑for‑purpose transition to a more sustainable fleet - without compromising safety, reliability, or operational readiness.

Seven years ago, Australian Red Cross faced a significant challenge. Its fleet was heavily reliant on petrol and diesel vehicles, with 80 per cent of vehicles running on petrol and the remainder on diesel. As an organisation guided by humanitarian values, Red Cross recognised the growing impact of climate change on vulnerable communities across Australia and the Pacific and committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

Working closely with Red Cross leadership, Interleasing developed a long‑term fleet transition strategy aligned to the organisation’s sustainability and carbon reduction objectives. This included conducting detailed fit‑for‑purpose assessments, piloting electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and tailoring vehicle selections to meet the diverse operational requirements of Red Cross teams nationwide.

A key milestone in the partnership was the launch of Red Cross’s first EV pilot program, which introduced charging stations across five locations around Australia. This enabled the organisation to confidently test and adopt battery‑electric vehicles where practical, while continuing to deploy hybrid or alternative solutions in regions where EVs were not yet suitable, such as remote and regional areas.

The results have been transformative. Over seven years, Red Cross has achieved an over 80 per cent reduction in fleet CO₂ emissions. Today, 75 per cent of the fleet is made up of hybrid and electric vehicles, with just 25 per cent remaining petrol or diesel. Alongside environmental benefits, the transition has delivered improved safety outcomes, including a significant reduction in accidents, and reduced fuel and operating costs.

Beyond vehicles, the partnership has focused on ensuring staff and volunteers are placed in safe, reliable, and fit‑for‑purpose vehicles - enabling them to respond rapidly and effectively during emergencies, when communities need support most.

Australian Red Cross continues to lead the not‑for‑profit sector in environmental performance, demonstrating that strong sustainability outcomes can be achieved through collaboration, honesty, and long‑term commitment. Interleasing is proud to play an integral role in that journey, helping the Red Cross stay on the road, reduce emissions, and deliver hope where it matters most.
